This session will outline the history and progression of drug-resistant heartworm and how this is affecting how heartworm disease preventives get approved in the United States. Field-collected drug-resistant heartworm isolates and their susceptibility to different approved heartworm disease preventives will be reviewed. The challenges in developing safe and effective new drug classes and modalities of heartworm disease prevention will be discussed. Attendees will develop a fluency in the process of the development, approval, and labeling of heartworm disease preventives to help make educated choices for their patients. Presented by: Zoetis
