Information
As veterinary clinicians, we have long approached aging and chronic disease management with the best tools science and medicine have provided-pain management, nutritional and medication support among them. In the past, we have looked at kidney and liver health, adrenal and bladder health, pancreatic and cardiac health. But recent evidence from both human and veterinary medicine has brought into focus an essential factor that we had previously been missing: skeletal muscle. Muscle is not merely a structural tissue-it is a metabolically active, immunologically relevant, and clinically modifiable organ. In truth, muscle mass may be one of the most important and underutilized predictors of longevity and resilience in companion animals. Whether we are treating arthritis, obesity, chronic kidney or heart disease, or supporting a pet through post-surgical recovery, muscle health deserves a central role in our clinical strategy.
