Information

Delivering difficult news is an inevitable part of veterinary practice. From sharing a cancer diagnosis to addressing high treatment costs or misunderstandings, these conversations are emotionally charged for both clients and staff. How they are managed directly affects client trust, team confidence, and the overall culture of the hospital. This session examines the skills and strategies veterinary professionals need to navigate these high-stakes moments with clarity and compassion. Using principles of emotional intelligence, empathy, and active listening, participants will explore ways to reduce tension and create space for meaningful dialogue. Both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques will be highlighted, with attention to the distinct roles of client service representatives, technicians, and veterinarians. Frameworks such as the Kübler-Ross grief model, SPIKES protocol, and Crucial Conversations methods will be applied to common veterinary scenarios. The discussion also considers the communicator’s well-being, recognizing the impact of compassion fatigue on communication effectiveness. Learning Objectives Participants will be able to: Apply emotional intelligence and active listening techniques in emotionally charged situations. Demonstrate empathetic communication strategies that foster client trust. Anticipate client reactions using established models of grief and communication. Use structured tools from Crucial Conversations and SPIKES to guide difficult discussions. Identify approaches to protect resilience and reduce compassion fatigue.
